Car Rental Excess Insurance

Guest Blog Post

You’ve heard this one. It’s the birthday of someone special. In your opportune hours of kindness and generosity, you planned to put them behind the wheel of a nice car and travel somewhere special, maybe even somewhere magical. You didn’t purchase rental car insurance.

Things didn’t go as planned.

It might have been an accidental dent on your door from a nearby car, or perhaps you were simply blamed for damage that you missed during the inspection when you were at peak excitement for the adventure ahead. Was it really your fault? You hand the keys back with a whopping $5000 hit to your credit card and a sour taste in your mouth as you utter… more>

A Question from one of Our Customers

Jerzy:
“I recently purchased Tripcover for a rental car hire.
After picking up the car, I realised that the car had existing damage that I had not reported on the Damage Form that I signed.
I am concerned that I may have to pay the excess to Budget and put in a claim if they try to say the damage occurred during my rental period.
I have been looking over your claim form in case I need to complete it.
Can you please tell me what you mean by Police or Accident report and what you would require for this type of damage so that I can be prepared if Budget charge me the excess for this damage.”

Tripcover Team Member:
The police report is only needed if it was a significant accident Kate.
This is a common trick the car rental companies can play with their customers.
Always pays to walk around the car and video it or take a few pics.

Why Tripcover is Cheaper Than Allianz

Untitled-2

JOSEY WROTE:

I am thinking about purchasing a rental vehicle excess insurance and have a question regarding the quotes on your website.

I see that the insurance you provide is from Allianz. I have asked Allianz for a quote and their premium is higher than yours for a 16 day rental:

$4000 AUD excess with Allianz costs $281 AUD and with you $135 AUD

$6000 AUD excess with Allianz costs $383 AUD and with you $295 AUD

Can you please help me understand why is there such a difference? Is the cover the same regardless of getting it through you or through the Allianz website?

Thank you.

MY REPLY WAS:

Exact same policy Josey, only you are paying a premium with Allianz and Hiccup (they are the system provider) as they are covering
21 to 75 year olds in the same policy.

We have split our policy up to:
25 to 75 and
21 to 24 year olds

So if you were 22 years old our’s would cost you around the same price as with Allianz

My husband and I planned to make a trip from the Netherlands to Australia in May-June 2016. We booked in advance a camper during 6 weeks. The insurance was from Tripcover.
Unfortunately my husband got very, very ill. He needed an operation and further therapies. It wasn’t possible to make the planned trip. But his health is most important. We booked a lot in advance and when you are worried about your husband it is very, very difficult to ask for cancelling all the booked things, specially for English is not my native language.
Desmond Sherlock of Tripcover responded prompt: “Give me some days and I will see what I can do for you.” Some days later we got the prepaid money refund!!!
Gorgeous, it gives us a very, very warm feeling in difficult times.
